THE PROBLEM AND NECESSITY
Through a process of modernization of the Olympics, breakdance was included as an Olympic sport to debut in Paris in 2024. This is how the contact with the Chilean breakdancing federation came up to create the first national Olympic indumentary for this sport.
Breakdancers use clothes that lack the necessary technicality to compete in optimal conditions. We observed problems of resistance to friction, impact, textile elongation, fiber hygroscopicity, among others.
On the other hand, this dance is part of the urban Hip hop culture, which has an identity and, therefore, the clothing used by the actors of this movement must represent them stylistically.
Finally, the way in which this sports federation will represent Chile in the Olympic games is considered, so the suit has a national identity graphic.
THE PROPPOSAL
The challenge was to create a technical indumentary for the Chilean breakers to represent the stylistic codes of their culture and to compete in the 2024 Paris Olympics. The textile technology needed to respond to the physical and mechanical demands of the dancer, the costume was designed through the most representative stylistic codes and visual attributes of the Chilean Hip hop culture together with a graphic and a textile pattern that represented Chile through the visual signs that the Hip hop community recognizes as the country's identity.
BETWEEN AUSTRALIA AND CHILE
While the creative process was taking place, I moved to Australia. This gave me another perspective by being able to observe my country from the outside. The situation of adapting to a new culture certainly enhanced my interest in this project even more.
